Your granddad sounds like a man whose wisdom we should hear more of on here

i did a tefl course last year without any intention of going abroad anytime soon to teach. its a really useful qualification to use anytime- its easy to find a job quickly in thailand, south america, wherever, book a flight and start working. the course i did was really hard (bridge mills) really hard course but really worthwhile. plus there are english schools in galway you can work for, but youd have to have experience elsewhere first as they rarely hire ppl who have just got their tefl. good luck smokes.

Couple of friends of mine did the CELTA, they reccomend that a lot more than the TEFL.
One is in Korea right now, the other spent 6 months in Thailand, a few in China and is now in Turkey.

CELTA is the only thing worth doing if you're looking to go for more than a year. You can do them part time over a few months or full time (which is very intensive) over 5 weeks. They're expensive enough to do in Ireland, but much cheaper in Europe. A lot do them in Madrid, Barcelona, Prague or Budapest. Most big cities have an International House or British Council (2 main schools) where they do them. Howver, you obviously need to find accommodation and pay rent while you're there.

Online tefls qualifications aren't worth the paper they're not written on.

Avoid I to I like the fucking plague.

Best site for jobs is tefl.com

Best site for lesson plans and forums about different countries is http://www.eslcafe.com.

I've heard a lot of bad things about I to I, so i'm looking at TEFL International, there are 30 or so different locations around the world where you go for a month and study an intensive TEFL course, it seems fairly legit, anyone know anyone who's done this or similar?

I don't know anyone who has done that specific course. It seems reasonably legitimate, but I couldn't find where it says who it is accredited by. The fact that it refers to a "TEFL qualification" isn't very reassuring, it should really be saying CELTA or Trinity somewhere. Ask on http://forums.eslcafe.com/, it's s great resource and one of the main forums for TEFL teachers.

Can't really go wrong with British Council or International House courses, they're the industry standard.
